Wild life in the Rocky Mountains George Frederick Augustus Ruxton Books Reviews

spectacular
its too bad Ruxton died young
he was an incredible writer
I re read this book it was so good
A former British soldiers examination of the early American West during the first struggles between the U.S. and Mexico. an interesting perspective of America from a foreigners point of view.
The book was an interesting tale of the author's experiences in the (largely) unexplored west from New Mexico to and through Colorado in the 1840's. Some of his experiences to me are suspect since he cited sleeping in the snow without fires, and having to roll up in soaking wet blankets with wet feet, etc., etc.. It made interesting reading, but it would have helped to have included maps showing his route , etc. Recommended for those who enjoy early wild west adventures. The words and language he used was a bit stilted and probably typical of some of the writers of the day.
Fascinating record of a traveler in the year before our civil war. Full of observations only a British could write, well written, unvarnished accounts abound. The author never states the reason for this grueling trip, but after a few pages I didn't care to know, simply enjoying the narrative.
Rarely do we have access to first-hand accounts of what the western wilderness was like before the great onrush of settlers, cattle, miners, etc. altered it for all time. Ruxton is an excellent observer and is able to tell us what he experienced in clear, graceful prose. We will never know what this talented and dauntless man would have accomplished had he lived beyond the age of 27.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The writing style is fun to read. I can't vouch for its historical accuracy but it sure gives a lot of interesting information about the West in the 1840s and life in the mountains, crossing the the dessert, mountains and plains and all that had to be faced in those days to do that. It was a great read and I was disappointed when it ended!
This book is a most interesting read regarding an English adventurer through Mexico and the western United States in the late 1840s.
Attention to detail and his opinions of the United States, and it's people for that time period is unique in its descriptions. I recommend it's reading to those who desire more insight into the history of our country.
