Confident at work but clueless at love, Claire is 40 and overweight—not a recipe she imagines can solve the romance gap. Dealing with her father’s death and an angry teen doesn’t make it easier. Finding no help from her ex, who is distracted by remarriage to a much younger woman, Claire copes by relying on a faithful circle of friends, a wicked sense of humor, and a new interest in fitness. When Claire meets Rob, a beguiling, slightly pudgy man at the gym, there is an instant connection. Just maybe she can haul the composure she finds at work into the gym with her. Or is it fat chance for that?
“A funny, moving portrait of a small-town Jewish community and the people who inhabit it, including a single mom coping with loss, a teen, and modern love. You’ll be rooting for Orenstein’s characters—especially her witty, lovably self-deprecating heroine—the whole way through.”
— Jennifer Richler, author of essays appearing in The New York Times, Slate, Salon, and The Atlantic
“Fat Chance is an evocative journey that sharpens our contact with what it means to be human. And it is a hilariously loving yet unflinching portrait of a woman imprisoned by the body she thinks isolates her from love and—maybe more important—sex. Orenstein is like a magician pulling pennies from the air, infusing the haunting with laughter, the seeming inescapability with hope, and in the end offers the surprising and poignant gift of a special kind of joy.”
— Michael Adams, author of Blind Man’s Bluff and Anniversaries in the Blood
A novel by Aviva Orenstein, a professor of law at Indiana University-Bloomington. Presented by Quid Pro Books in quality ebook edition (in addition to new paperback and hardcover printings), this book contains active Table of Contents and active links to Book Club Themes and Questions.

I started and finished 'Fat Chance' this weekend (It is notable that that the newest season of House of Cards was just released - tough competition!!) Finishing the book rather than binge watching Netflix was an easy decision as I quickly became invested in Joanie, Sam, Rob and - of course - Claire. I read quite a bit - typically one or two books each week - and give 'Fat Chance' 5 enthusiastic stars. The book is funny, surprising and well-told. If you're looking to get lost in a smart story with memorable characters search no further! (Here's hoping 'Fatter Chance' and 'Fattest Chance' are in the works...)Product details

Fat Chance edition by Aviva Orenstein Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Entertaining and fun, once I started reading , I couldn't stop. Hope to see further adventures of the heroine 'Claireleh' in the future!
Orenstein had me at Mrs. Teitelbaum. The book is delightful and delovely, with some serious touches, and just slightly transgressive. A quick read, which will leave you smiling and eager for her next book.
This is a delightful story about the life of a "real" single woman. I simply love the story, her friends, neighbors, family, all worth hearing about and getting to know! I often marvel at the wisdom writers have to share and this writer is no exception.
This story captures the truth of our lives in each small circumstance that happens. In the awkward moments and in the times of grief. The fun way she portrays each character will remind you of someone or a situation that has happened in your life. From the first page of the book she had my attention with humor and throughout the book she moved me from one emotion to another. It reads so well that it is hard to put down and keeps you eager to find out what is next and you aren't disappointed. It moves along quickly from one chapter to the next. Very pleased to purchase this book and tell my friends about it.
Aviva Orenstein has created an engaging, well-rounded (in every sense of the word) character in Claire. Claire is definitely someone with whom you would like to break bread, or more appropriately, share coffee and doughnuts. Do not be misled by Claire's deft one-liners -- her humor is interlaced with some heart-wrenching issues!
Ellen S. Goodman
Don't read this delightful book at bedtime, as it's too exciting, but not in the way of horror stories and such; it's an exciting book about relationships - the protagonist's, Clair's, relationships with herself (including her weight), her friends, potential boyfriends, her young teenaged son, etc. Clair can be very funny and very blunt. She speaks her mind to the reader and sometimes to others, almost embarrassingly at times to this sheltered reader. Clair has no inhibitions about articulating her sexual perceptions and preferences, thoughts about the annoying people in her life, and integrating her zaftig body into the narrative. Clair can be very funny as well as profound. I recommend you bring her and the people in her life into your own. I assure you that you will have a very enjoyable time.
Move over Jonathan Tropper! Orenstein's sweet and sassy romp through upper middle class Jewish suburbia is a joy. Her characters are funny, earnest, and exasperating. You'll be rooting for Claire, the zaftig heroine, from the moment she sinks her teeth into that first jelly doughnut! We all need a friend like Claire.
